Have you got a favourite place to cry? This study has found that a whopping 74% of people save their tears for when they’re in the shower.
Bathroom retailer Showerstoyou surveyed 57,000 people from all over the world (getting 1,000 respondents from 57 countries) and found that the place people love to cry the most is in the shower.
So it seems all those shower crying scenes we’ve seen on TV aren’t that far off base after all.
Why could this be? We don’t know for sure, as there’s not a wealth of research into the science of crying, but there are some studies we can draw from.
Psychology professor Ad Vingerhoets of Tilburg University previously told The Cut that he and fellow Dutch psychologist Waldie Hanser found that the most common things people do to self-comfort are, apart from listening to music, crying and making themselves feel warmer.
There’s also the fact that the bathroom offers a degree of privacy – between that and the warmth and comfort of a shower, maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that shower crying is so popular.
However crying alone might not be for the best.
Vingerhoets and University of South Florida psychologists Jonathan Rottenberg and Lauren M. Bylsma previously analyzed 3000 different ‘crying experiences’ and found that those who ‘received social support’ while they cried were the most likely to say their mood was improved after they cried.
So the next time you feel like you need to shed a few tears, remember that reaching out for support will probably help you feel better.
