You’re either going to love this rental property or hate it. It’s a bit of a divisive one.
A two-bedroom flat in what used to be a parish – yep, it’s the basement of a church – has come on the market, available to rent for £2,000 a month.
And yes, it is in London, so that rent almost seems reasonable.
The flat sits in the basement area of a converted parish, inside the gated area of St John’s Church in Southwark.
The church, also known as St John Horsleydown, was designed by architects Nicholas Hawksmoor and John James back in the 1700s, and was famous for its massive tapered column spire.
In 1968 the church closed, and now the building has its own flat up for rent.
The flat itself is pretty unusual, with arches ceilings leading to different rooms.
It’s received a fresh renovation to add in a fully-fitted kitchen, two bedrooms with wraparound LED lighting (which you’d need, as obviously there’s limited light in the basement level), and plenty of storage space.
There’s one bathroom, a kitchen, and a large lounge space, too.
The space is being marketed by Acorn, who describe the flat as: ‘full of mystery and wonder’, and say the lounge is ‘a perfect blank canvas and space to make your own, great for entertaining, dining, and showing off to guests’.
Location-wise, it’s a solid rental, close to Bermondsey Street and within walking distance of London Bridge and Borough stations.
Plus you can stroll to Borough market at the weekend, which is always a treat.
If you do fancy renting in a former parish, you can do a virtual viewing and request further details through Rightmove.
