We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home this year. Which hasn’t been great, but it has given us fresh impetus to make our homes look gorgeous.

From framing images to buying countless houseplants, investing in comfier furniture or warmer lighting, or rearranging your space to accommodate working from home – loads of us have invested loads of time and energy in where we live, and now it the time to look ahead to the new year.

From snuggly winter balconies, to stylish and timeless dried flowers – next year’s interior trends are all about home comforts with a touch of class. And it looks like the home office might be here to stay.

Richard Heard at DotComBlinds has had a look at the Google data to see what people are searching for, and can reveal the booming interior trends that are likely to blow next year.

So, now’s your chance to get ahead of the game and snap up the most popular items and looks before they hit the big time.

Home offices

The working from home movement has led much of the UK to revaluate their living spaces.

Once thought of as just a temporary solution during lockdown, working from home continues to evolve into a long-lasting norm.

‘Such a rise in the search term 2021 home office, showcases that the UK is prepared to continue to work from home well into the new year’, says Richard. ‘I predict that home offices are set to become the norm as the UKs workforce moves to city outskirts and workplaces adopt a scattered shift pattern to their staff.’

‘If you feel that you lack space for a permanent office set up, do not fret. It is likely that you have space within the home that you have not yet considered.

‘A hallway is typically forgotten space. “L-shaped” desks or standing workstations are a great way to optimise space. Room dividers can segregate space and serve as a means to prevent the feeling of working, living, and relaxing in exactly the same space’.

Winter balconies

‘If 2020 has taught us anything, it is the importance of obtaining outside space’, states Richard.

‘Pre 2020, for many a balcony and/or garden was perceived as a “nice to have” rather than a “need to have”, used a few days a year in the summer months.

‘Of course, the current climate combined with one of the hottest summers on record has shifted our mindset.

‘The search term winter balcony receiving a search increase of 293.75% reveals the nation’s intention to continue their use of their outside space, even in the winter.’

He adds that the summer of 2020 saw home-owners and renters make lots of investment outdoor purchases – like hot tubs.

‘The fact that the data reflects the UK’s want to continue use of their outside space 365 days a year signals that the investment purchases are set to continue into 2021,’ he explains.

‘I strongly believe that 2021 will solidify outside spaces evolving into an extension of a person’s interior. Of course, costly purchases are not necessary to create an amazing space. The implementation of Festoon lighting is a great and cost-effective way to add warmth with a luxury fee to a space.’

Sustainable furniture

Sustainable furniture is furniture that is made of reclaimed or recycled materials. The notion of upcycling has grown in popularity for several years, and Richard believes the trend is set to continue.

As the term sustainable furniture receives a 430.57% rise in search volume, 2021 is likely to be the year of incorporating the trend into homes across the country.

‘Taking a conscientious approach to your furnishings not only ensures that your home is brimming with environmentally friendly touches, but it has a timeless feel,’ says Richard.

‘If you are unable to obtain sustainable furniture, perhaps if you live in a fully furnished rental property, you can still embrace an environmentally friendly conscientious mindset by purchasing goods that you know you can move from property to property.

‘Furnishings such as blinds can be used in multiple properties and cut to size. They can also add colour and reflect your personality to rooms that you may be unable to paint.’

Dried flowers

A favourite on Instagram, colourful dried flowers will be the interior trend of 2021.  This is reflected in the data as How do you dry flowers? Has received a 186.87% uplift.

‘Drying flowers couldn’t be easier’, says Richard.

‘The simplest way is to air dry them. Remove the leaves and arrange the flowers into a bouquet. Tie together. Tie the arrangement upside down to a stick, hanger, or wire.

‘Ensure that it can support the flowers for a long period of time. Hang the flowers in a dry area that rarely experiences light pollution. The flowers should be left for a minimum of three-four weeks.’

Home-grown vegetables

Lockdown saw the nation adopt green fingers and grow their own vegetables. As the search term how to grow your own vegetables in winter receives a 159.75% rise in searches, according to Richard, the trend shows no signs in slowing down.

‘Growing your own vegetables aligns with the sustainable and environmentally friendly mindset,’ he says. ‘I predict that the production of vegetable patches, whether they are on a balcony or in a garden will boom in 2021.

‘The trend is not only child friendly but stirs nostalgia and even boosts your mental wellbeing.’

Nordic interiors

Interior design that reflects the Scandinavian style principles boast simplicity with a sense of functionality and minimalism. With beauty at its core, it is no surprise that Nordic interior has seen a 333.33% rise in searches.

‘Spending so much of our time in 2020 indoors, it is inevitable that people will crave neutral colour palettes, clean lines and products that hold purpose in their functionality’, says Richard.

‘Research reveals that neutral colour palettes increase serotonin levels in the brain, boosting positive thoughts and productivity. With so many of us working from home in 2021, the Nordic style is only going to grow in popularity.’
