People are different – that’s what makes the world go around. Some people, for example, love the summer – beaches, late nights, hours in the sun – whereas others prefer the snuggly side of autumn.
Chunky jumpers, warm soup and, yes, pumpkin spice lattes – which you can make at home now, if you can’t get to a Starbucks.
If you’re much more crispy leaves than burning to a crisp in the summer heat, this one’s for you.
But just when is the autumn equinox?
When is the Autumn equinox 2020 and what does it mean?
The autumn equinox for 2020 will take place on Tuesday September 22.
The equinox marks the end of summer, and the start of autumn – astronomically.
The meteorological autumn officially starts on September 1.
The autumn equinox finds the Sun crossing the equator, and those in the Northern Hemisphere will start seeing more darkness than daylight.
The Farmers’ Almanac – a traditional publication that is used to predict the seasons and the weather – describes the autumn equinox as marking ‘the turning point when darkness begins to win out over daylight.
‘Essentially, our hours of daylight – the period of time each day between sunrise and sunset – have been growing slightly shorter each day since the summer solstice in June, which is the longest day of the year…
‘At the autumnal equinox, day and night are approximately equal in length.’
Autumn 2020 will end Monday December 21, at the time of the Winter Solstice.
When are the other equinoxes?
Every year, the seasons are marked through equinoxes and solstices.
There are two equinoxes – the autumn equinox and the spring (or vernal) equinox – and two solstices –winter and summer.
The spring equinox for 2020 was on Friday March 20, and the vernal equinox 2021 will again fall on March 20.
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year – the day with the most recorded hours of sunlight – and marks the beginning of the astronomical summer.
The summer solstice 2020 fell on June 20, and the summer solstice 2021 will take place on Monday June 21.
On the flip, the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year – the day with the least sunlight and the beginning of astronomical winter.
