With many classes going online now, students and teachers are realising just how easy it is to forget to mute yourself.

One student who didn’t notice her mic was on when she cracked a joke to her friend – but her professor could hear everything.

Kayla Morris, a 20-year-old student at Randolph College in Virginia shared the mishap on her TikTok after a maths lesson with Dr. Marc Ordower.

Dr. Ordower was teaching the class about dimensions. When he wrote 1-D on the board, Kayla’s mind went to One Direction the band.

She joked: ‘One dimensional? More like One Direction’.

Little did she know the microphone was on and the professor had heard the comment.

It left Dr. Ordower perplexed as he had never heard of the band before.

Kayla’s friend advised the professor to keep going with the lesson but Dr. Ordower couldn’t concentrate.

‘I hate missing jokes,’ he told the class who thought the screen had frozen while their professor paused to figure out the joke.

Kayla’s TikTok has been viewed more than two million times with people sympathising with the situation.

The embarrassed student then later emailed her professor to explain the snafu.

In an email, she wrote: ‘To explain, you said 1-D as in one dimension and the joke was 1D as in One Direction, the British boyband from 2014 so it was a play on words, sorry for that!’

But Dr. Ordower wasn’t too fussed.

He replied saying: ‘Thanks for explaining! I’ll go look up One Direction as I’m not familiar with them.

‘And, I’m happy that you’re talking and joking with your classmates. Since we’re separated, everyone has to bond somehow.’

True to form, the professor did his homework and came back to class the next day playing a One Direction song.

Kayla also showed the views and comments on their video which pleased Dr. Ordower.

‘That really made me laugh, and people who left comments were so kind!’ he told her.

‘I’ve never been part of a video that was so popular before and seeing what you had created and reading the feedback was a lot of fun.

‘Thank you for taking the time to put all this together and for sharing the link with me.’
