The temperature has dropped, the leaves are turning and there’s an undeniable feeling in the air that autumn has arrived in the UK.

While wreaths are traditionally associated with Christmas and festive decoration, a trend has developed for creating beautiful autumn wreaths to adorn your front door or home with autumnal colours and scents.

The idea is to use the leaves that have fallen off the trees, as well as dried flowers and quintessentially autumnal or wintery scents such as cinnamon to create a natural decoration for your home that celebrates the turning of the seasons.

Here, we share expert tips on how to make your very own autumn wreath and where to buy one if you don’t have time to get crafty this September.

How to make an autumn wreath

All you need to make an autumn wreath is a piece of vine or similar to make the foundation of your wreath (or cheat and buy yourself a wreath base), some florist wire or raffia and then cuttings, foliage, leaves and flowers from your garden that you have foraged.

How you actually put an autumn wreath together can be subjective – kind of like flower arranging – but you tend to start by adding the bulky foliage and leaves first before building in smaller elements like berries, spices and dried fruits or flowers.

Geraldine from Folky Dokey, a small creative business that specialises in dried and preserved floral hair accessories, bouquets and wreaths, shares her top tips for creating a beautiful autumn wreath and how to help your homemade decoration last beyond one season.

‘The dry period between Summer and Autumn is the perfect time to get out into the wild and forage for ingredients for wreath making,’ Geraldine tells Metro.co.uk.

‘This time of year sees an abundance for pearlescent Lunaria, wild oats and Poppy heads but don’t be scared to go for the more interesting shapes and textures of weeds and grasses too.

‘To keep dried wreaths lasting for years I always recommend them being displayed indoors out of direct sunlight and damp conditions.’

If you want to jump on the autumn wreath trend but don’t want to make your own, the following wreaths can all be bought from Not On The Highstreet:
