September 23 is annual Bi Visibility Day – a day dedicated to raising bi awareness and challenging bisexual erasure.
Today marks the 22nd Bi Visibility Day as the event was established in 1999.
Although events worldwide have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, many bisexual people and their allies are still finding ways to celebrate in their houses and online.
But what is Bi Visibility Day, and what does the bisexual flag mean?
What is Bi Visibility day?
Bi Visibility Day was set up in 1999 to help raise bi awareness and challenge bisexual & biromantic erasure.
It was created by three bi activists from the USA – Wendy Curry, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven Wilbur.
In an interview with Huffington Post on why the day was founded, Wilbur said: ‘Ever since the Stonewall rebellion, the gay and lesbian community has grown in strength and visibility.
‘The bisexual community also has grown in strength but in many ways we are still invisible. I too have been conditioned by society to automatically label a couple walking hand in hand as either straight or gay, depending upon the perceived gender of each person.’
The day is officially recognised in 30 different countries including the USA, UK, and South Africa.
Bi Visibility Day is usually celebrated in the form of parties and parades.
However, due to coronavirus restrictions, many have instead taken to Twitter to make the most of #BiVisibilityDay.
You can also find online events to partake in on the official Bi Visibility Day website.
What is the bisexual pride flag?
There are as many different Pride flags as there are sexualities, with the gay pride flag (a rainbow) being the most famous.
However, there is in fact an official bisexual flag.
The bisexual pride flag was designed by Michael Page in 1998 to give the bisexual community a symbol and identity.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in pink, purple, and blue.
Pink is for same-sex/gender attraction, blue is for different sex/gender attraction, and purple is to represent the attraction across the gender spectrum.
