Crème brûlée is one of those desserts that sounds far too fancy to make on a regular weeknight.
But – as with so many recipes recently – a TikTok hack has given us a simpler and easier way to make it without any fuss or extra expense.
Shefshaq, a content creator on the platform, shared his own spin on the classic pudding, using melted vanilla ice cream in place of having to faff around and make your own custard.
On top of all that, you can make it in the microwave and oven with absolutely no need for a blowtorch or other chef-y equipment.
You’ll want around half a cup (or 120ml) of melted ice cream per person. You can either melt this in a bowl in the microwave or do so the old-fashioned way by leaving it in the fridge overnight.
You then add in one egg yolk per serving, whisking thoroughly so it’s all combined and then pouring into ramekins.
The only slightly tricky bit is the baking, which requires something called a bain marie.
After pre-heating your oven to to 165C, get yourself a cake tin or high-walled roasting tin and put your ramekins inside.
Once the tin is in the oven, carefully pour some water from your boiled kettle into the tin, letting this full to about halfway up the side of your ramekins (the water should never touch your brûlées).
Bake for between 40 and 50 minutes until they look wobbly and cool in the fridge – again, be very careful around the hot water.
Once they’ve chilled for at least two hours, you can caramelise sugar in a pan on your stove (no oil or anything required other than sugar) and drizzle over your brûlées.
Alternatively, you could sprinkle some sugar on top and put under the grill, but you will need to be careful not to burn them, as sugar can blacken very quickly.
Once we’re allowed dinner parties again, it’s safe to say this is going to be a seasoned favourite.
