Grab a box of tissues, because things are about to get emotional.
We’d like to tell you the story of Georgia – a rescue dog who tragically lost her whole litter recently.
The pregnant pooch was found by Sunshine Dog Rescue near a gas station by the US-Mexico border, where she was surviving on scraps.
Georgia had to undergo an emergency C-section but despite the team’s best efforts, they were not able to save her unborn puppies, all of whom were born prematurely.
The Australian Shepherd mix understandably became frantic after realising that her pups had not survived, desperately searching the sheets for her babies.
‘The best way I could describe it was she was frantic,’ Anita Osa, founder told ABC15 news station.
‘It was so sad, she was looking for those babies.
‘She tore up the toddler mattress we had her on, trying to find her babies.’
Desperate to help the dog through the horrifying ordeal, Anita took to Facebook on a mission to find orphaned puppies who could benefit from Georgia’s love – and her milk, as the pooch was lactating.
As fate would have it, at that same time four orphaned kittens were in dire need of a mum.
Anita was hesitant, given they were a different species, but it turned out to be an excellent match.
‘I was certainly unsure,’ she said.
‘But I had seen other species nurse another species before, so I thought “worse case scenario she doesn’t take to them and I have some kittens I need to tend to myself.’
However, tragedy struck again as one of the kittens died on the first night.
Thankfully, the other three were doing well – and the unorthodox family was taken care of by the rescue centre, where they recovered together.
Anita said: ‘I introduced them to her gently. I first brought one out and let her sniff it, and she seemed to accept it, so I brought the others out.
‘It’s amazing to see how she instantly calmed down. I think for the kittens, they have no idea that Georgia is a dog.’
The story has a happy ending as all four animals have since been adopted by new owners.
Georgia even lives with one of her new babies – as the roommate of the person who took her in fell in love with the kitten.
