We’ve all experienced the pain of ruining a beloved item of clothing with a stain that just won’t budge.

Before you go hunting down the most high-power stain removers on the market, it’s worth trying something that might already be sitting in your cupboards: eucalyptus oil.

A mum has shared a super simple trick for removing stubborn stains, and the hack is being applauded as ‘life-changing’ online.

The woman posted in a cleaning-focused Facebook group that she had used eucalyptus oil to remove the stain left by a permanent marker leaking on to the front of her hoodie, after asking people for advice.

Other members of the group recommended soaking the stain in eucalyptus oil for 30 minutes before rinsing it with water – and when the mum tried the technique, she was blown away by the results.

She wrote in the group: ‘It worked so well! I rinsed the stain with water and squeezed the texta out as much as I could [to ensure] the colour didn’t run.’

After soaking the essential oil into the fabric for 30 minutes, the stain was ‘90%’ removed. The mum then poured bleach over the faded stain before popping it into the washing machine.

Once that was all done, the stubborn stain had disappeared.

Photos of the hoodie before and after the hack was used have attracted thousands of likes and comments, with many calling the technique ‘life-changing’ and ‘revolutionary’.

One person commented: ‘Oh my gosh! I saw this post last night and even showed my husband and told him that I didn’t think it would ever come out. I’m off to show him this.’

While many of us won’t have tried rubbing eucalyptus oil into our clothing, this trick isn’t actually a new discovery.

How to clean stubborn stains with eucalyptus oil:

  1. Apply a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil directly to the stain and rub in with a cloth
  2. Leave to soak in for 30 minutes
  3. Wash the item as normal

Eucalyptus oil has been praised for all sorts of unexpected uses over the years. According to online forums, it can be used to remove stains left by lipstick and chewing gum (the trickiest stains of all, basically), to clean scuff marks on walls, and getting rid of streaks on stainless steel.

Outside of cleaning, eucalyptus is also held up as a game-changer for clearing sinuses (put two drops in a small bowl of boiling water and inhale the steam), relieving sore muscles, soothing insect bites, and getting rid of dandruff.

Just make sure you don’t consume the essential oil undiluted, which can cause you harm.
