Yesterday, the ONS released their top baby names of the last year, with Oliver coming up top for boys and Olivia top of the list for girls.
Looking at the lists, it’s clear that a ‘vintage’ vibe has prevailed, with names like Edith, Florence, Arthur, and Theodore up there in popularity.
A decade or two ago, it’d be rare to find multiple kids in a class called Ivy or Albert, which shows just how naming trends can sweep the nation.
On the flipside of this is the fact that are names that fall sharply out of favour as time goes on.
Names like Doris and Clarence were due to become extinct in 2019, but there are some surprisingly modern ones on this year’s list.
Flowercard delved into the latest ONS data to reveal the baby names falling out of fashion, with Kirsty, Jordan (for a girl) and Shauna experiencing the biggest drops in popularity between 2000 and 2019.
At the height of Katie Price’s fame in 2000, 622 baby girls were given the name Jordan. However, in 2019, that had dropped to just six, a huge decrease in popularity of 99.04%.
Lauren experienced a drop of 98.02%, Kieran saw a popularity decrease of 95.51%, and Callum a of 93.50%.
These were names which many of us will have or have called our own children, so to see their popularity drop so sharply in just a few years makes us wonder whether this will be the case for young Arlo and Willow in future.
