We’ve seen some strange rental listings in our time, from a flat with a toilet in the kitchen to a one-bedroom apartment in New York advertised as the perfect place to ‘romp & play’.
But this one, while strange, isn’t strange in the usual way of cramped interiors or a previous tenant’s strange possessions.
In fact, it’s not necessarily a bad spot to call home – just unconventional.
We’re talking about a compact home on the grounds of Shenley Cricket Centre in Hertfordshire.
And when we say ‘on the grounds’, we mean it – the property is actually the scorer’s box.
It’s a little on the small side, spanning just six metres by three metres, but offers a combined lounge and kitchenette, one bedroom, and one bathroom.
The kitchenette even has a microwave, stainless steel bowl with tap, and an electric hob.
The kitchenette and lounge comes with a wooden laminated floor and the bedroom and bathroom have skylights to lighten up the compact rooms.
You get all that, plus the fun of living on a cricket ground, for £795 a month, with a £917 deposit.
Has living in London completely warped our minds, or is that really not a terrible deal?
The main benefit of the home is, of course, its location. We doubt anyone who doesn’t love cricket will really appreciate it.
Whoever rents the home will get ‘expansive’ views of the cricket field and the novelty of hiding behind the wall where teams’ scores are listed.
Be warned, though, that we don’t think this can be a permanent dwelling. The home will be ready to move into in October, just as the season ends, and we suspect the tenancy may not carry through to when teams are actually playing on the field.
It’s worth noting that pets aren’t allowed, either, presumably as there’s potential for a load of balls flying around.
You’ll also need to pay an additional £100 a month on top of rent to cover heating, lighting, water, and council tax.
The listing, which has since been removed from the Barkers website and Rightmove, read: ‘A VERY unusual, DETACHED one bedroom house built within the Score Box of Shenley Cricket Centre.
‘With expansive views around this is a MUST SEE property.’
