The picture above shows Kha-Pwong the cat in his natural state. It’s very far from how he looks now.

Kha-Pwong had been suffering a bout of ringworm, leading his owner Supamas Thammapa, who goes by the nickname Dew, to try a homemade treatment.

The Bankgok resident, 28, was so worried about her cat’s infection that she asked her mother for some advice, and was recommended to apply turmeric on her fluffy feline.

Scottish fold cat Kha-Pwong, who is just eight months old, has pure white fur. Turmeric is known for staining everything from hands to work surfaces. You can see where we’re going here.

The Indian spice – which is famed for its medicinal properties as well as its flavour and colour – stained Kha-Pwong all over, and he’s now walking around like a real-life Pikachu.

At first, Supamas painted the spice mix only on the affected area of ringworm, but as there was a lot left she decided to paint all over his whole body to prevent future infections.

Her attempt to rid her cat of ringworm did not go quite as planned, and Kha-Pwong’s fur immediately turned bright yellow, with baths and rubbing not making any headway on getting the stain off.

Supamas decided to have fun with her kitty’s new colouring, and even photoshopped some of her cat’s photos to make them look more similar to the popular Pokemon character.

After sharing the snaps on Facebook, they were soon inundated with thousands of likes, and many people agreed Kha-Pwong did, in fact, bear an uncanny resemblance to Pikachu.

Thankfully, Supamas sees the funny side of the unfortunate incident, telling Jam Press, ‘I cannot stop laughing, it’s funny to me because things in Thailand are really stressful at the moment.’

While she is not sure if or when Kha-Pwong’s fur will go back to its original colour, Supamas says her kitty appears to be oblivious to her new look.

Is turmeric safe for cats?

There isn’t much by way of scientific research on the safety of turmeric for cats.

Anecdotally, people report giving their cats small amounts of turmeric to eat or using a paste on areas of skin dryness or irritation due to the anti-inflammatory properties and proposed health benefits of the spice.

The ingredient hailed as a miracle for health in turmeric is curcumin, and you can buy animal supplements that feature this.

However, always consult your vet before administering any new treatment.
