Learning a new skill can be a daunting prospect – especially if it involves being expressive.
Ballet is the sort of beautiful dance that requires absolute discipline as well as creativity and emotion… which is why little kids make for good beginners. Learning for the first time as an adult? Well, it’s understandable to be apprehensive.
But if you’ve always wanted to give an arabesque a twirl, now’s your chance. Professional ballerina Patricia Zhou has been uploading tutorials to her YouTube page which take you through basics that every beginner needs to know.
Each class in the 10-part series lasts for about an hour – so you’re really getting a proper session each time. All you need is a mat and something comfortable to wear and Patricia will take you through the moves. Week one is all about learning to move uninhibited – from the wrists and back to the hips and ankles.
Once you’ve gone through ten hours of free, professionally taught ballet, it’s time to up your game.
Patricia is now offering an online class which she drops every week. It’s $10 (£7.64) per class, $18 (£13.75) for two classes a week or $25 (£19.10) for three classes a week. She releases a new class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with the once-a-week Monday class being suitable for all levels. The more regular classes are designed for more advanced dancers.
With lockdown getting many of us to be more active – and particularly looking for accessible and new activities a la Yoga with Adriene and HIIT with Joe Wicks – this could be your next fitness obsession.
