TikToker goes viral for ingenious tip for milking a cucumber to remove bitter taste

Making milk from nuts and rice might have had some sort of renaissance in recent months, as supermarket shortages forced us to get creative.

However, a recent viral TikTok showed us that we’re actually milking the wrong produce altogether, and should be giving our cucumbers a good milking before eating.

This isn’t like milking a cow, in the sense that you don’t drink what comes out.

Instead, you ‘milk’ the cucumber to remove a white substance that you then throw away. This removes the bitter taste that’s often found in the salad vegetable.

TikToker @BasicallyPerkfect told how she first learned the trick from her sister in law, and now has become a ‘master milker’.

All you need to do is cut the end off the cucumber, and rub the two parts together in a circular motion.

You’ll then see a white substance coming out, which you’ll remove once you’ve finished the milking process.

After that, you’ll have a fresh-tasting cucumber with much less bitterness than you may have had otherwise.

BasicallyPerkfect’s video has racked up over 111,000 likes and thousands of comments, with people’s minds blown by the tip.

Far from being just another social media trend, though, there’s a scientific basis in it.

Milking a cucumber draws out the cucurbitacin, which is the chemical that sometimes creates a bitter taste.

Not only will your cucumber taste nicer, it can also help with your digestion if you sometimes find yourself with odd symptoms after eating the veg. For example, cucurbitacin has been linked to diarrhoea and vomiting, so removing it with this technique can make sure you’re not running to the loo after your salad.
