Charity ActionAid has worked with local Nigerian photographer Etinosa Yvonne to capture how women are dealing with the coronavirus outbreak in Nigeria.

The series of photos is part of ActionAid’s Women by Women campaign, which shines a spotlight on the talent of local female photographers and brings a different perspective to the way women and girls living in poverty are represented.

Etinosa’s photos document food distribution in the region of Abuja, where relief items have been given to vulnerable women to support them and their families during the lockdown.

As the pandemic starts to hit, millions are facing a double emergency; already without enough to eat or drink, their livelihoods have now completely shut down.

Etinosa said: ‘When I am working with women and in communities, I see the way women look at me doing something which a man would normally do, they praise me and admire me.

‘As a female photographer, I understand these women more than a man ever would, I know the right questions to ask them and I understand their struggles.’

Taking these photos means Etinosa has to work during the crisis. She is adjusting to using protective gear while working and is also conscious of the spaces she works in.

‘Working during the Covid-19 pandemic has been a rollercoaster,’ she says. ‘Whatever I am going through, people in these communities are going through even worse.

‘It has been difficult to find a way to help people and balance my work, adapting to protective gear. New ways of working have been tough.’

She wants to inspire other Nigerian girls to pursue their dreams, no matter how impossible it may seem.

‘When I visit communities, I always tell the girls to dream because they can be more than what they are already.

‘I am hoping that we can inspire girls all over Nigeria, whether rural or urban, to tell their own stories, reclaim their truths and write their own narratives.’
