Every house in the world has a cupboard full of bags for life. That is a fact.

But it doesn’t need to be that way, opening the cupboard for a deluge of bags to fall out and be stuffed back in after the next shopping trip.

There are easy tips you can use to bring order to this den of chaos, streamlining your bag for life collection – for life.

First thing’s first you need to have a clear-out. Pull all the bags out and get rid of those that have holes in them or are beyond repair.

Of course, recycle these where possible – some stores allow you to return them for a refund or a new bag.

Then, give the ones you have a good clean. Canvas or cotton backs can be put into the washing machine on a warm wash. Just make sure you’ve gotten rid of any receipts or debris that’s lurking inside.

Sturdier bags that won’t go in the machine can get a wipe down with diluted disinfectant (we’re Zoflora loyal for the smell but you can use whichever brand you prefer).

Once they’ve been left to dry, it’s time to fold them.

How to fold cotton and canvas bags

  • Lay the bag on a flat surface with the handle extended at the top.
  • Flatten down any creases and wrinkles in the bag.
  • Fold the bag (not including the handle) into thirds horizontally. It should look like a strip at this point.
  • Grab the left and right sides of the bag and bring them into the middle.
  • Tuck one of the sides into the folds of the other, and you should be left with a neat square that doesn’t pop open.
  • Wind the handle around the square as tight as you can.

Do this to all the bags you have, and you’ll then be able to stack them in your cupboard neatly and cleanly.

How to fold plastic bags for life

With plastic bags, you can get them even smaller and more compact.

  • Flatten out your bag onto a flat surface, removing any creases.
  • Fold in half vertically twice so you have a thin, long strip.
  • Make a triangle shape by folding one of the bottom corners diagonally upwards.
  • Keep doing this with opposite ends up the bag.
  • When you get to the top of the bag and don’t have enough to make another triangle, tuck this extra piece into the slot of your last triangle.

Soon all your plastic bags will be in neat triangles, which you can also stack, or store in a small basket to pick up easily before your shopping.

Now you just have to re-fold once you pop them back after each trip, and you’ll never have such an uncontrollable bag cupboard ever again.
