The coronavirus lockdown has resulted in, among other things, a desire and/or need for people to get creative in the kitchen when it comes to learning how to make their favourite foods.

Between various food and ingredient shortages, the drive to minimise our contact with the outside world amid the pandemic, and even just sheer boredom, many of us have tried to learn how to make beloved foods ourselves.

One of the most beloved foods there is hummus, so it’s little wonder people are out there searching for tasty recipes even when there’s not a global health crisis going on.

Regardless of your reasons, here are some recipes for hummus any chickpea fan will be desperate to try.

Making your own hummus is relatively simple.

All you need is:

  • A food processor
  • A tin of chickpeas, drained
  • One tbsp of tahini
  • Crushed garlic cloves to taste
  • Lemon juice to taste
  • A pinch of salt
  • Three/four tablespoons of water to make the hummus your preferred consistency

Method

All you need to do is blend all of the ingredients in a food processor until you have lovely smooth hummus. If you want to make the mixture smoother, slowly add more water to the mixture.

If you have a tsp of paprika lying around, it can be sprinkled on top when the hummus is ready to serve.

A drizzle of olive oil also wouldn’t go amiss!

If you want something a little different, ChicP’s Hannah previously gave Metro.co.uk her recipe for butternut squash and ginger hummus.

To make it, you need:

  • A food processor
  • 1 or 1/2 a butternut squash (sweet potato can be a substitute too)
  • 100g chickpeas
  • 1 tbsp of shaved ginger
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • Tahini, 1 tbsp
  • ½ garlic clove
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method

First, roast the butternut squash and once it’s soft, let it cool then blend.

Then add all the cooked chickpeas, followed by the rest of the ingredients.

Finally, add a little more lemon juice, olive oil or water if the hummus is too thick and you want a lighter consistency.
