Get ready for a cruelty-free staycation in Margate at this new vegan hotel

As if Margate wasn’t trendy enough already, the seaside town is now set to get its first vegan hotel.

A book shop in the Old Town is going to be transformed into a five-bed hotel complete with roof terrace and plantbased restaurant.

The man behind the plan, Paul Blayne, already owns Beet Bar – a popular vegan cafe in Margate – and runs two-room B&B Beet Beds.

His new hotel venture is going transform Hooked on Books (which is located in a Grade II-listed building) into a cruelty-free haven that conveniently leads into the cafe.

While you can only enjoy the roof terrace if you’re a guest at the hotel, Paul says that the hotel’s gardens will be open to the public.

He told Kent Online that he turned vegan after opening his cafe so that he could eat a healthier diet, and that after that, it was a ‘no brainer’ to turn his little BnB vegan.

‘We had opened two rooms and soon realised with having the vegan food in the bar, it wouldn’t be too much of an ordeal making them vegan,’ he said.

‘So doing away with feather pillows and having all vegan toiletries.

‘It’s great for vegans but also doesn’t push out those who aren’t.’

Work on the hotel has understandably been put on pause thanks to the coronavirus crisis but Paul hopes it’ll resume soon.

This crisis may well change the way we holiday in the long term, with more of us looking to explore parts of the UK rather than hopping abroad – so it’s great to know that new and exciting hotels and hostels are in the offing, even if we can’t get to them right now.

Vegan travel is something that seems to be growing in choice and popularity. Last year, Scotland’s first fully vegan hotel – Saorsa 1875 opened its doors in Highland Perthshire, while earlier this year, Hilton Bankside created a cruelty-free, 100% plant-based hotel suite. And Greece’s first fully vegan hotel is set to open in Mykonos this summer…although it may be a little while before any of us get out there to visit.
