Cats Protection introduces hand-free homing so you can adopt a kitty in lockdown

If lockdown has made you realise the power of a feline pal, you’re not the only one.

But sadly, with everything shut down, it’s been tricky to adopt the cat of your quarantine dreams with the whole coronavirus thing going on.

Cats Protection has come up with a solution: hands-free homing.

Their new system will allow people to re-home cats while adoption centres remain closed to the public.

It’s pretty simple. If you’re keen to adopt a kitty, you can browse the cats currently looking for homes through the charity’s website, where photos, videos, and full descriptions will be available to give you as much information as possible.

If a match is made, Cats Protection will arrange a virtual meet-up to do all their necessary checks.

If all goes well, you’ll pay an adoption fee and then your cat will be dropped off at your home in a Cats Protection van, with social distancing rules strictly observed.

Every cat will arrive neutered, microchipped, and with a clean bill of health, so you don’t need to worry about loads of vet checkups in lockdown.

Follow-up calls over the following weeks will make sure the cat and their new owners are all happy and settled, with extra support and advice handy if you need it.

Claire Blekkenhorst from Sutton, Surrey, and her 11-year-old son Cooper adopted their seven-year-old black cat, Wilfey, with the new hands-free scheme and everything went swimmingly.

Claire said: ‘We are so in love with Wilfey. He has bonded so specially with my son and follows him everywhere. They have become very firm friends and sleep together every night.

‘For a seven-year-old cat he is super playful and inquisitive. He has loads of toys but, to be honest, his favourite game is to chase his own tail!

‘We are so very grateful to Cats Protection for matching us with Wilfey. We lost our first cat in January and I honestly couldn’t imagine another cat coming in to our lives and being adored so much, but it turns out it is possible.’

Cats Protection director of operations Mark Beazley said: ‘This is a fantastic scheme, which will not only help us to find loving homes for the cats in our care, but can also help provide much-needed companionship for people at this difficult time.

‘We know from our own research that nine out of 10 owners say their cat has a positive effect on their mental wellbeing. And two thirds also said that their cat helps them calm down when working from home, which it looks like many of us will be continuing to do for some time to come.’
