Lots of us get embarrassed when it comes to our feet – mainly because we tend to neglect them a little more than other parts of our bodies.
Not only that, but all kinds of foot problems emerge from the day-to-day activities and pressures we put on our feet – we’re talking cracked skin, corns, calluses and verrucas.
Our feet have a tough time – so it makes perfect sense that many of us turn to a pedicure when we are looking for a complete foot overhaul.
But, while a salon pedi has the ability to turn around tattered-looking toes, what’s the etiquette when it comes to medical conditions? Is it acceptable to get a pedicure, when you have an infectious condition, like a verruca?
Jade Taylor from Naio Nails tells Metro.co.uk that she thinks it’s unsafe not only for the nail technician, but for other clients, too.
She says: ‘I wouldn’t carry out a pedicure on someone who had a verruca as they’re highly contagious and despite sterilising all tools after use, as standard, I still think it’s an unsafe practice.
‘Nail technicians have a responsibility to protect themselves and their other clients from cross-contamination.
‘It’s advisable for the client to properly treat the verruca and only once it has completely healed would I advise them to book a pedicure in a salon.’
But it’s not just verrucas which put both staff and other customers at risk. Jade adds that anyone with an infection that can easily spread – be it viral (warts), bacterial or fungal – should hold off.
These conditions can be easily treated and once they’ve gone, it’s perfectly safe to get a pedicure again.
Jade adds that another thing to be aware of is ingrown toenails – which are often caused by cutting nails too short.
She adds: ‘Ingrown toenails are also an issue, these are the bacterial infection technician’s are most likely to come across and the average nail techician would not perform the pedicure.’
Jade advises that if you do have an ingrown toenail, it’s better to get a medical pedicure than one from a beauty salon.
She says: ‘They can treat many of these problems and will give your feet some much needed TLC.’
Jade adds: ‘People should be aware that ingrown toenails can also be caused by a nail technician being a little too over eager with the clippers, or trimming your nails too far back.
‘If it’s a recurring problem, and has started since getting pedicures, I would reevaluate your options and see a podiatrist instead.’
