Now that we’re in lockdown, people are taking up all sorts of hobbies to keep themselves busy and make the most of an otherwise dispiriting time.
One of the most productive of these hobbies is learning to grow your own food, and although the results won’t likely be quick enough to get you past the empty shelves in stores right now, you’ll eventually get something to spice up your meals.
Food growing might seem like something that’s only for people with green fingers and massive gardens, but there are options on the market for windowsills and raised beds on balconies as well.
These kits come with everything you need to get growing, and can all be delivered right to your door.
Funky Veg and Psychadelic Salad kit, NotOnTheHighStreet, £30
As well as the pots, peat blocks, labels, and instructions, this kit comes with seeds to grow purple carrots, red brussels sprouts, stripy tomatoes, yellow courgettes and multi-coloured swiss chard.
The seeds are to be planted in spring, which means it’s the perfect time to test out your skills and reap the rewards.
AvoSeedo Grow Your Own Avocado, Amazon, £18.99
Never let anyone tell you you’re spending too much on avocado toast again – simply make your own avos.
This ingenious kit allows you to put an avocado seed on the float and leave it to germinate (just change the water every two weeks).
In three to eight weeks once the seed has rooted, you plant it in the provided pot and let your magic money tree thrive.
Grow Your Own Detox Juice, Firebox, £5.99
If you’re a health nut who’s been struggling with juice bar closures, you might be pleased to know that you can grow your own with this handy kit.
The kit contains a bag with everything in it to grow wheatgrass straight out of the bag. Then just snip off and stick into your blender along with whatever else you want.
Vegetable growing kit for children, Amazon, £14.70
With most little ones home from school at the moment, parents will be aware that there’s only so many kid’s TV shows that can keep them busy.
This kit is designed for children, teaching them about seed germination and how to take care of plants.
Grow golf-ball carrots, purple-podded peas, radish, spinach and dwarf runner beans with the kit.
Grow A Dick willy chillies, Firebox, £10.99
Designed as a tongue-in-cheek gift, this is actually great for novice gardeners.
Just add water and watch the chillies grow in their wooden pot. Yes, they do look like penises, but that’s of little consequence when you have delicious fresh chillies to munch on.
The Smart Garden 3, Click and Grow, €99.95 (£88)
The most expensive item on this list, and one more for the tech lovers of the gardening world, this Smart Garden is for use indoors.
Pop in the plant pods (it comes with three basil ones, but you can buy others – including peppers, tomatoes, salad leaves, flowers, and catnip), and the machine will calibrate automated watering, light and nutrients.
Even the Smart Soil in the pods is NASA inspired.
Grow Your Own chestnut mushroom kit, Amazon, £16.85
We’ve all ended up with a paper bag of mushy mushrooms languishing at the back of the cupboard. With this kit, though, you grow your own and take off however many you need.
The boxes are ready activated, so all you do is take the lid off, sprinkle over the provided compost, water, and watch your mushrooms grow.
If you follow the instructions correctly, you can have mushrooms for months.
Vegetable growing kits, Greenhouse Sensation, from £12
Greenhouse Sensation have tomato kits, chilli kits, and various planters that’ll make the most of your space.
Different ones are available to prevent common problems with planting, such as root rot and lack of water.
Basically, if you’re ready to get into this vegetable growing thing for real, these could be ideal.
