It seems we’re always disagreeing when it comes to bed linen.
How often should you wash your bed sheets, for example? (Spoiler, the answer is not and never will be four times a year, single men we’re looking at you).
The latest bed-related discussion is on pillowcases.
Most of us can agree that one of life’s simplest pleasures is sliding into a clean bed after a shower for a good night’s kip.
But it seems some people go the extra mile in making sure the experience is a bit more crisp.
This camp enjoys ironing their pillow cases.
Journalist and standup comedian Derek Skelton decided to find out what ‘normal people’ do with their pillowcases and asked if they ironed them before bed.
It might seem arbitrary but it seems there is a band of people out there ironing out the creases on their linen.
People replied to Derek’s tweet saying it was a natural choice.
One person wrote: ‘Of course! Otherwise you’d be lying on horrible creases!’ while another said: ‘The crisper the better’.
Another person chimed: ‘Yes – there’s nothing like the feeling of freshly washed and ironed bed linen’.
Others said: ‘Sweet scented, crisply ironed bedding are one of life’s pleasures. My linen cupboard is tended and treasured. There’s nothing like fresh bedding after a stressful day’.
Meanwhile in the no camp, followers said: ‘Never in a feckin million years. Only shirts, uniforms for children and anything that needs it. The people that iron sheets need to STOP. NOW.’
While others said: ‘No, because life is too short. Even during pandemic boredom.’
If you’re in the no camp but are tempted to try out super smooth pillowcases then try to iron out damp sheets for best results.
According to BedLinenOnline, ironing your sheets while they are still damp is most effective.
They say you should also use a very hot iron to get rid of those stubborn creases.
If you want to save some time, they recommend folding your linens in half, vertically, and ironing that way.
If you want to iron your bedding but don’t have much time, you can consider ironing them while they are on the bed.
Starch company, Niagra, says, ‘If you choose to iron on the bed, keep movements quick and light’.
Make sure you check whether heat can damage your mattress. If you have a memory foam or latex mattress, don’t iron your sheets on there as this can damage the material.
Washing your linens with starch will also ensure they stay crisp and smooth.
So, happy ironing?
