There’s a special kind of sadness going to the cupboard to get some jam or marmalade to put on your toast and realising it’s gone mouldy.
Whether it’s salsa, pickles, preserves, or passata, jarred items can all fall victim to the dreaded mould, but one mum has shared an easy tip to stop this happening.
‘A great tip to stop food in jars from going mouldy once you open them is to store them upside down in the fridge. It seals them and stops them from going bad, which saves you time and money,’ the mum – who runs page The Prepped Mama – wrote on Facebook.
She said she ‘tips up all [her] jars’ as ‘it’s such a great way to prevent waste’.
Alongside this was a picture of her fridge door, which had everything from apple sauce to tomato paste with their lids on the bottom.
Speaking to Daily Mail, Senior Food Microbiology Consultant with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, Cathy Moir said that this can actually work.
She explains that: ‘By turning the jar upside down, that surface where a mould may have landed when you opened the jar is now squashed against the lid without much air and it will find it more difficult to grow.’
That said, the tip will work best when done with thicker liquids like pastes and jams, rather than liquids, so perhaps don’t bother when it comes to pickles in vinegar and the like.
It also won’t completely stop any bacteria from growing, so you still need to practice good food hygiene and always use a clean spoon to take food from these jars, and leave them open for as little time as possible when you’re cooking.
On a practical note, it’s also important to make sure your lids are fully closed before tipping them on their head.
One person commenting on the original post said, ‘I used to do that until I had a jar of tomato paste leak everywhere.’
Lesson learned!
