A mum has shared what it was like to give birth to what’s thought to be the first baby born at home in the UK lockdown.
Kathryn Wanton woke up her partner Rob Edrenius, 32, when she felt her water reak at 6am on Thursday 26 March.
She started getting contractions and Robin called for an ambulance at 8am.
Grandfather Matthew Layzell, 51, and the the couple’s first daughter Leia, two, were also on hand.
Before paramedics were able to arrive Robin and Matt delivered the baby at home – and called her Heidi Astrid.
Robin cut the umbilical cord and then mum and baby were taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital.
Heidi is thought to be the first baby born at home in isolation.
Robin said: ‘It escalated quite quickly. I’m on the phone and suddenly a head pops out.
‘I was in shock. Shortly after, all of a sudden a baby comes out. I have never been so panicked in my life. I didn’t know what to do.
‘I didn’t realise how close it was. All of a sudden I was holding my baby in my arms.
‘You hear about people giving birth at home but you don’t expect it to happen to you.’
Kat’s stepfather Matt said: ‘It’s a bit of exciting news in these uncertain times.’
