A glocal pandemic changes many, many things.
Lots of people are in precarious financial situations as being under lockdown means they can’t go to work and earn in the same way.
Others have seen declines in demand and a drop in sales.
But for some professions, namely those online, the lockdown has resulted in an increase in work.
For cam girls who work virtually, this has definitely been the case.
In case you don’t know, cam girls are, usually, women who use webcams to interact with paying customers.
They can just have conversations, show some nudity, or take requests to do things from the viewer.
Before the coronavirus lockdown, many users would pay to watch but didn’t have their own cameras on, so they could remain faceless viewers.
But in times of self-isolation, many are grappling with loneliness and are turning to cam girls for human interaction.
Cam girls at Off The Record modelling agency have told Metro.co.uk that since the pandemic, they are seeing unprecedented levels of people wanting camera-to-camera interactions.
One cam girl, who goes by the name Red_Delicious, explains: ‘I have never had so many cam-to-cam requests. Since this has all started, everyone wants cam-to-cam.
‘It’s as if there is that extra connection of face to face, which is something that we are getting less of in our day to day life under quarantine.
‘For me, every single person has said, can we cam to cam, whereas before it was only 20-25%, but now everyone wants to do that.’
She adds that some of her customers have included key workers, who often chat to her about what they’re experiencing on the frontline.
‘I’ve been speaking to a lot of frontline key workers and it’s been interesting how much they’re on call and how much they’re having to go back out there,’ she says.
‘A lot of them have said how nice it is to talk to someone and how I brighten up their day, so it’s like a little source of comfort amongst everything being so uncertain, I think.’
Unsurprisingly, the topic of conversation is often coronavirus.
‘There are lots of new people I’m talking to which is great, so it’s nice to have new conversations with people,’ Red_Delicious adds.
‘They’re all working from home and the topic is always coronavirus, isolation and how everyone is in it together. It’s interesting because it’s almost become a focal point.’
The timing of calls has also changed, moving to late nights.
This could be as all members of the household are at home and it’s not always possible to speak discreetly.
Performer Your Goddess Jo says: ‘It’s been quite odd online lately since the lockdown, I’ve personally found that it’s been quieter during the day but a lot busier after 10pm in the evening.
‘I can only assume that that is due to gentleman being at home with their partners/homeschooling their children, etc. I’ve also noticed an influx of girls online too.’
She has also seen a rise in calls during quarantine. But again, from people who just don’t want to feel alone
Customers want to feel someone is near and having cam girls, regardless of whether they’re actively working or in front of the camera or not, helps to alleviate their loneliness.
‘I have had a few people that I haven’t spoken to before,’ she explains.
‘I’ve found that I’ve had an influx of silent phone chat requests more than anything. To deal with this I just make sure I have my chat on constantly when I’m not on cam.’
Your Goddess Jo has also been vocal about her experiences of being a cam girl under lockdown and people have reached out to check on her, which she appreciates.
While the experience has mostly been positive, she does expect that at some point she may get weird coronavirus-related requests.
And it’s not that surprising considering the pornographic interest in the virus.
Another performer has had a pleasant time thus far.
Cam girl Sofiasanctuary says webcam chats have been a great way to communicate with the outside world.
‘Since the lockdown came into force cam has been a lifesaver,’ she explains, ‘a feeling of still communicating with the outside world while keeping that normality I’m used to.
‘There have definitely been many new people coming in and it’s great finding out how they are coping with the craziness.’
She has also seen a lot of care and attention towards her own wellbeing, which feels like a rarity, considering the harsh ways sex workers can sometimes be treated.
She explains: ‘I think the loveliest part has been regular chatters coming in frequently to ask about my wellbeing and to make sure I’m ok’.
One of the comforting things, she says, about the whole situation is that we’re all in this weird time together. And she can relate to the frustrations of her customers.
‘I definitely noticed some frustrations in the first couple of days but I feel like people are starting to accept the situation now,’ Sofiasanctuary says.
‘The coronavirus has been the main topic of conversation for a few weeks now and has made us all feel like we’re a community again going through the same trials and tribulations sharing opinions and coping mechanisms.
‘It’s great knowing we are all helping each other through this time.’
