Easter weekend is coming up and with coronavirus lockdown still in place, it’s likely that supermarkets will be extra busy as people scramble to get seasonal treats for the family dinner.

Many are also unable to leave their homes, because they have Covid-19 symptoms (if you do, please do not go to the shop) or because they have underlying health issues, and will be relying on delivery – or others dropping off their shopping.

We find out if supermarkets like Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco are open on Good Friday and if delivery slots are running over the weekend so that you can get all the Easter treats you’re after.

Are supermarkets open on Good Friday?

Most supermarkets are operating on reduced schedules due to the pandemic, but they will be open this Friday.

Here are the specific timings for the biggest chains, and information on whether their delivery slots will remain open over the weekend.

Sainsbury’s

If you head to the bigger stores, you’ll be able to shop from 8am to 9pm on Good Friday, but smaller local stores will close one hour earlier at 8pm.

On Easter Sunday, the superstores will be shut, and back to their usual 8am to 8pm on Monday. Use Sainsbury’s store locator to check local opening hours.

Do note that the first hour of the day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays is reserved for the elderly, carers or disabled customers.

As for delivery slots, at the time of writing, you can order goods as usual over the weekend (if you can find a slot) and the Easter egg selection has been revealed.

Asda

Most Asda stores will run their usual coronavirus schedule of 8am to 8pm on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday.

But don’t head out on Easter Sunday, as all of the stores will be shut.

Unfortunately, Asda has no click and collect or online delivery slots free until 14 April.

Tesco

On Good Friday, Tesco Extra, Metro and superstores will open their doors from 8am to 8pm on Good Friday, and extended hours of 6am to 10pm on Easter Saturday.

Similar to other stores, these will be shut on Easter Sunday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but will remain open in Scotland from 8am to 8pm.

As for Easter Monday, Metro, Extras and superstores will be open from 8am to 6pm (England and Wales), 10am to 7pm (Northern Ireland) and 8am to 8pm (Scotland).

Tesco Express stores will run as usual.

At the time of writing, Tesco is at capacity for deliveries for at least the next few weeks.

Waitrose

Most Waitrose stores will be open from 8am to 8pm on Good Friday, and Easter Monday, and all of them will run on the usual timings on Easter Saturday.

Some Little Waitrose stores are open later, until 7am to 10pm, but use the store locator before you leave your house to be on the safe side.

All Waitrose stores in England and Wales will be shut on Easter Sunday.

Waitrose’s delivery slots are currently fully booked until 9 July.

Lidl

In England and Wales, Lidl stores will be open from 8am to 8pm on Good Friday, are open as usual on the Saturday and shut on Easter Sunday.

On Easter Monday, the stores will be open from 8am to 8pm again.

Lidl stores in Scotland will not change their opening hours during Easter weekend.

Marks & Spencer

On Good Friday, Marks & Spencer stores will be open from 8am to 8pm, and closed on Easter Sunday.

Shopping will resume at 8am on Easter Monday, when they close at 6pm.

Use the store locator to check your local M&S.

As for home delivery, it’s a no-go – but the chain has partnered with Deliveroo to ensure essential items like milk and bread can still be delivered.

Morrisons

Morrisons usual opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm.

However, the supermarket chain recommends that people check its store locator to see if their local store is open during the Easter holidays.

At the time of writing, there are no delivery slots available with Morrisons.
