Woman gets entire building to sing happy birthday from their window for fiancé’s 30th

Lockdown birthdays require a lot of creativity.

One woman who wanted to surprise her fiancé for the big 30 wanted to make it extra special while under quarantine.

Hannah Chung, a photographer from LA, set about orchestrating an epic plan for partner of five years Jason Shields, a videographer.

She told Jason that they’d be going out for some sun and while heading out, asked him to open the window in their building hallway.

A slightly confused Jason was met with a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ from 76 different families in his apartment complex.

The couple had moved into a new property a few days before quarantine and have yet to meet their neighbours.

So the task of getting everyone to agree with Hannah’s plan was no easy feat.

The determined bride-to-be ended up hand-writing 76 invites to be slid under the door of everyone in the building.

Hannah left a date and time for everyone to wait by their windows for her countdown.

All of them abided for one lovely, wholesome happy birthday count.

The pair got engaged in December and were due to marry this year but then, as for many of us, coronavirus changed their plans.

Hannah, who shared a video of the sweet tribute on TikTok, tells us how she arranged the whole thing.

She says: ‘Jason’s birthday was the big 3-0 and being under lockdown, I really couldn’t do much for him.

‘We couldn’t see anyone, we couldn’t go anywhere, and I didn’t have any baking ingredients, so I couldn’t even bake a cake!

‘The day before his birthday, he was busy working on a crazy project, so he was super tuned into that. I got out my box of crafts and told him I was making him a birthday card, so he never even turned around.’

The couple lives in a historical building where the inner units face an open atrium.

Hannah wrote 76 invitations to all the interior-facing neighbours, inviting them to celebrate Jason’s 30th birthday with her.

She added: ‘I included my number to have everyone RSVP. I told them all that I would count down from 3 at 2:30, and to send me any videos they take of the event.

‘In order for me to send out the invitations, I lied and told Jason I was going to run the stairs for exercise. This is something that we actually have been doing within our building because our community gym has been closed due to social distancing.

‘That night, the RSVP texts started pouring in, and it was actually a fantastic way to meet all of our neighbours.’

The next day at 2pm, Hannah started noticing everyone opening their windows.

‘At 2:29, I said let’s go to the roof to get some sun for his birthday. We grabbed a couple of drinks, left our apartment, and walked past the hallway windows.

‘I told him to open one. He said, “why?” and I said that I had a surprise for him. It was 2:30. I stuck my head out, saw everyone else doing the same, and started counting down from three!

‘And it was crazy how many people participated. There were a lot more attendees than I expected, certainly more than the number of people who actually RSVPd!

‘Everyone knew his name from the invite, so there was no pause during the song, and it was loud!’

Their new neighbours were such good sports and one even waved a ‘happy birthday’ banner.

‘It was all very sweet how everyone came together to celebrate a stranger’s birthday during a time of isolation.

‘Jason was super surprised, totally impressed, and incredibly touched by all the support.’
