World Book Day is an annual event dedicated to celebrating reading, authors and everyone’s favourite fictional characters.
Recently, it’s probably best known for the amazing costumes it inspires across the country – with Matilda and Harry Potter costumes proving among the most popular.
However, some have despaired the fact that the costumes have overshadowed the meaning behind the day – to celebrate reading.
So what’s it all about, and when is the next World Book Day?
World Book Day was initially set up in the UK in the 90s with the aim of encouraging young people to read.
Its organisers, also called World Book Day, are on a mission to ‘give every young person a book of their own,’ an aim achieved by the abundance of book tokens they send to schools, and the £1 titles they release every year.
Millions of book tokens are sent to pupils across the country which they can use to pick up a special £1 book.
The 2020 range includes Evie in the Jungle (Matt Haig), Kid Normal (Greg James & Chris Smith), My Awesome Guide to Getting Good at Stuff (Matthew Syed) and many, many more.
They also provide resources on their website for schools of all levels and nurseries.
From assembly ideas to colouring sheets, to show and tell cards and lists of recommended books, there are hundreds of World Book Day resources to peruse for free.
World Book Day falls on the first Thursday of March, meaning the next one will fall on Thursday 4 March 2021.
So, if you missed this year’s event, you have plenty of time to plan, and of course, plan your elaborate costumes
