On the hunt for the best kebab in London?
You might want to go vegan. Sorry, meaty shawarma fans.
What The Pitta, a fully-vegan kebab stall in Shoreditch, won the title of the Best Takeaway In London at this week’s British Kebab Awards.
The awards, which take place annually since 2013, ‘seek to celebrate kebab restaurants across the UK’, and named What The Pitta as their top spot in the capital city.
This is the first time a vegan kebab place has won at the awards, and having been to What The Pitta multiple times ourselves, we have to say it’s well-earned.
Branches in Shoreditch, Camden, Brighton, and Croydon offer a Doner Kebab Wrap filled with meaty soya pieces, mixed salad, hummus, tzatsiki, and jalapeño poppers – all of which is entirely vegan – as well as a Falafel Wrap and a Doner Chip Box.
Each menu item is packed to the brim so it’s plenty filling, and looks great for the ‘gram as well.
No wonder What The Pitta has found fans in JME and FatGayVegan.
Just be prepared to get a bit messy. When you bite into one of their kebabs there’s bound to be some sauce spillage.
The runner-up for London’s best takeaway at the awards was The Charcoal Grill Plumstead.
Ibrahim Dogus, Lambeth-based restaurateur and founder of the Kebab Awards said: ‘The kebab is an unsung cornerstone of high streets across the country, and the simply superb quality of this year’s entries shows that British small businesses can more than compete on a world stage of cuisine.
‘What is also just as important is that we must not let Brexit hinder the UK’s flourishing restaurant and takeaway industries, which employ so many people often from migrant backgrounds.’
