Coronavirus and the resulting lockdown and stockpiling has meant it’s nigh on impossible to pick up certain items from your nearest supermarket.
Oh, you’ve run out of toilet paper? You’d better make your own reusable version or quickly adapt to that bidet life.
Bread? Milk? Pasta? Ask for any of these things in a shop and prepare to be laughed at.
That’s why people have lost their minds over easy recipes for making these staples, such as the trick for making a flatbread with just a few ingredients.
The latest crafty recipe to capture people’s attention is the microwave bread trick.
This simple technique lets you make bread – or something that tastes a lot like bread, if we’re getting technical – in 90 seconds.
The recipe, shared by Surrey Live, is as follows:
Ingredients:
- 40g self-raising flour
- One egg white
- 25g margarine
- A squeeze of lemon juice
- A third of a teaspoon of sugar
- A third of a teaspoon of baking powder
Method:
- Pop the egg white in a mug and whisk until it’s foamy
- Mix in baking powder and lemon juice
- Add in all the other ingredients and mix until smooth
- Microwave for 90 seconds
Now, be warned, this is not going to make a magical loaf like the one you’d buy in the shops. It’s a mixture in a mug. You can attempt to wriggle it out of the mug to slice it up and toast it if you want, but we’d recommend having it as more of a plain cake.
Top with baked beans or spread on butter and jam or chocolate spread.
If you don’t have any eggs (another item that’s commonly nabbed from shops the moment they open), you can swap the egg white for three tablespoons of aquafaba (the juice from a tin of chickpeas), a mashed ripe banana, three tablespoons of water with one tablespoon of ground flax or chia seeds, or three tablespoons of milk with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
I’ll be bluntly honest here and say I have not tried this recipe. I got to the point of mixing the lemon juice in there when I remembered I don’t have a microwave at home and the lockdown means I can’t just use the one in the office kitchen or a pal’s.
So if you do try this recipe and find it’s either a disaster or a winner, please do share your experience and photos in the comments section below.
The people need this and shouldn’t be punished simply because I’m self-isolating in a flat that doesn’t have enough counter space for any additional appliances.
