World Book Day 2020 will take place on Thursday 5 March – to celebrate, kids and adults alike will be encouraged to dress up as book characters and develop their love of reading with special books and events.
Wondering what to be for World Book Day? We’ve got you covered with ideas bought straight from the shops to homemade (/last minute) ideas.
World Book Day costume ideas
So we can all appreciate the intent behind World Book Day, but it can put the pressure on – what should you be? Do you need to buy an expensive costume?
Luckily there are different ways you can take part – whether you want to go all out or want to get a bit crafty and imaginative.
Katniss Everdeen
The odds won’t have to be in your favour to nail this look.
A popular choice for any strong, brave girl, this one can actually be done relatively easy.
Buy a bow and arrow set, and some other accessories, and just wear all black or other ‘outdoors-y’ looking clothes to be an obvious candidate for the Girl on Fire Katniss.
Check out the costume on Amazon.
Harry Potter
The Boy Who Lived continues to live in the imaginations of kids, so Harry Potter would be a magical idea for a child this World Book Day.
Glasses, wand, robe and a lightning bolt on the forehead and you’ve summoned a winning look.
You can get a ready-made outfit over on John Lewis, or you could just create your own with a trusty pen, some fake glasses, and a make-do robe.
Mary Poppins
Practically perfect in every way, Mary Poppins is a classic character people of all ages will recognise.
And, if anyone thinks you’re just coming as a film character, remind them there were actually seven Mary Poppins books.
This three-piece costume on Amazon should do the trick.
Homemade World Book Day costume ideas
Short on budgets or time? You don’t have to go out and spend on an outfit that’ll only be worn a few times.
Here are some easier ideas that are low on cost but still big on creativity and fun.
George’s Marvellous Medicine
You can’t go wrong with Roald Dahl – and this is the perfect costume for anyone who left it until the night before.
All that’s needed is a red long-sleeved top and blue jeans, plus a big mixing spoon to carry.
Miss Honey
The teacher everyone is sweet on, Miss Honey is a great costume if you’ve low on time or budget.
A nice floral dress, a cardigan, some glasses and carry some flowers – simple, but effective.
World Book Day costumes for teachers
Lead by example – teachers aren’t excluded (or exempt, depending on how you look at it) from the fun of dressing up and getting involved.
Professor McGonagall
Have the kids under your spell this World Book Day.
McGonagall costumes can be bought direct, or you can just whack on a green coat/cape and any witches hat.
The real finishing touch will be a stern stare worthy of Dame Maggie Smith.
For time-poor, check out Asda’s ready-made costume.
Child Catcher
If you really want the kids to behave, buy yourself a Child Catcher costume – the villainous Chitty Chitty Bang Bang character is instantly recognisable.
But if you’re feeling creative, you can probably do this on the cheap, with a baggy black coat, top hat and menacing scowl.
