Cleaning your washing machine is important. After all, what’s the points of using a dirty machine to get your clothes clean?

People have been coming up with ingenious ways to keep theirs in tip-top shape, including using dishwasher tablets in an empty cycle for a sparkling drum.

However, a washing machine technician has revealed that there’s an even simpler way to stop the mould in the machine – leaving the door open when it’s not in use.

On a popular cleaning Facebook group, the technician stated: ‘The first thing I tell people when I’m called out to a job is to start leaving the doors on their washing machines open when they’re not using it.

‘Keeping it closed for hours and days on end can cause all sorts of problems.’

‘It’s the mould and grime build-up, which is your biggest problem,’ he continued.

‘A lot of people have to change the seal on their machines due to scum and build-up and that can be largely avoided or prolonged by keeping the door open.’

The comment came under a post on the Australian group where a woman showed a picture of her front-loading washing machine sealant.

‘Has anyone actually had any luck with cleaning the mould in the rubber seal of a front loader washing machine?’ she asked, and many commenters followed saying they have the same problem.

Because the rubber seal of washing machines like these is closed over, it’s easy not to notice that it’s slowly becoming more and more mouldy.

Thankfully, along with leaving your washer open, as well as using products like HG Mould Spray, Cillit Bang Mould Remover Spray, or Astonish Mould and Mildew Remover and leaving the product on for a few minutes, it should be easy to deal with.

After your chosen mould spray has been left to work for a while, use an old toothbrush to get right into the nooks and crannies and you should get good to go.
