If your kids are bored at home during the school closures, you can try teaching them some new skills that aren’t normally on the curriculum.
British Sign has launched some discounted online courses for people to learn British Sign Language (BSL) online.
The language is used by deaf people to communicate but the company wants to encourage people with all levels of hearing to pick it up.
Kids (or adults) can go through the online lesson plans to learn how to sign, and they even get a certificate at the end when they complete the course.
Usually, the Introducing British Sign Language course costs £25, and initially, they offered it for free but due to unprecedented demand, they have changed it to a pay-what-you-can scheme to cover some of the costs.
British Sign said: ‘During this difficult time, as more of us are finding ourselves in self-isolation or spending longer periods at home, we would like to provide the opportunity for you to use this time to learn British Sign Language.
‘Our 20hr CPD certified course can be studied at your own pace and is a comprehensive introduction to BSL.
‘Because of this we are now asking those who wish to sign up to the course to pay what they feel they are able.
‘Maybe things are particularly tight for you at the moment and you can’t afford to pay the full fee, or maybe you wish to pay extra to contribute towards someone else’s enrollment.’
The guide prices start at £3 but go up to £35 if you are able to fund a course for someone else.
The list on the website says:
- £3 – if you are a full time student or finding things tight right now.
- £10 – If you are a key worker or playing an important role during the current crisis.
- £15 – this is how much it costs us to provide each enrollment.
- £25 – this is the normal cost of enrollment and enables us to continue developing resources.
- £35+ – this will help fund someone else’s enrollment.
So many people were keen to take up the offer, the website crashed and British Sign advised that they would not be taking any more enrollments today (24 March) but people who are interested should check back tomorrow.
There is a queueing system where you can be notified by email when it is your turn to sign up, so make sure you join tomorrow morning.
