We might’ve all clapped for the NHS but there are still ways we’re failing our carers; by stockpiling and thus leaving them without food, and by not socially distancing.
And some, it seems, are going further by directly trolling those on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.
A paramedic has had to hit back at trolls who shamed her for wearing ‘too much’ makeup while on shift.
Laura Heath had posted on her social media about how she’s proud to be a part of the NHS.
While thousands thanked her for all the work she and her team do, some took the chance to criticise her choice to wear makeup.
Some wrote hateful comments such as: ‘Proud to be a heavily made up paramedic for this photo,’ and ‘Wtf really? “Look at me I’m gorgeous and I work for the NHS” selfies for a few likes while people are dying’.
Others wrote: ‘Seriously? I think that you’ve probably got better things to do than trout pout!’ and ‘There is a national crisis. Stop taking selfies and looking for attention for one day of your life ‘.
Some told Laura it was a sin to be prideful.
The 24-year-old is sick of people judging her by her looks.
She revealed on Twitter her appearance has caused patients and other members of the public to make lewd comments.
Laura says she was disappointed by the reaction of one harmless selfie.
She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘I posted a photo in my uniform after a tough shift of attending Covid-19 related cases with the caption that I am proud to be a paramedic as I was feeling low.
‘I then got an influx of followers and likes which was overwhelming and lovely but with that came a lot of comments aimed at my appearance and makeup.
‘I was told I wore too much makeup which personally I think I don’t even wear that much, I don’t wear fake lashes or eyeshadow or bronzer! So I keep it very minimal.’
Despite working extra long hours and putting her own health at risk on the frontline, some people even implicated her in the deaths resulting from the pandemic.
She added: ‘I had some comments being blamed for the death toll rising during this pandemic and how people would refuse to be treated by me if I showed up.
‘Initially, this really upset me and I found it hurtful because I couldn’t understand how people could show that much hatred towards me through a photo.’
Laura adds that she is recently qualified and did not expect a crisis of this magnitude but is proud to be on the frontline.
‘At 24 and only being qualified six months, I never thought I would be facing something of this magnitude which I’m tackling so I was proud of that,’ she says.
‘All I want to do is inspire young people they can make something of themselves and remind the world to be kinder to one another.’
