One man is doing his bit to keep spirits up during the coronavirus lockdown – by sorting out dinner for all 171 residents of his village every Friday evening.

An anonymous man has bought fish and chips to be delivered to strangers each week while they’re cooped up at home.

He’s ordered the meals from the Fox Inn pub in Denchworth, Oxfordshire and said he’d like to do it for a minimum of 12 weeks.

The owner of the Fox Inn, Stephen Davidson, told the BBC: ‘He was prepared to fund, once a week, a takeaway for every member of the village.

‘He said he’d like to do it for a minimum of 12 weeks. Depending how things go he may up it to two a week.

‘He may carry it on longer than that depending on the need and the take up on it.

‘He doesn’t want to be the focus of attention for this.

‘He thinks people like him who are fortunate to be in their situation should do something for their communities if at all possible.’

Stephen added that the unknown benefactor wanted people to see ‘how important pubs are to village life’.

Stephen and his wife will cook the meals using strict hygiene standards and use a small team of volunteers wearing masks and disposable gloves to deliver it to Denchworth residents.

The menu may be updated in future weeks to include curries or roast meals, so anyone not fancying a fish and chip Friday has other options.
