More and more of us are told that we can work from home after years of being told that remote working wasn’t possible.

‘YES!’ you might be thinking, ‘hello, weeks of working from bed with unlimited snack breaks and daytime TV’.

But let us assure you – working from home can be harder than it might at first seem.

After all, you still have targets to hit and projects to complete, and being alone can dissolve your resolve to be productive faster than you can say ‘self-isolation’.

So, how can you set yourself up to work the most efficiently while stuck at home?

Debbie Clarke started her business online and from home after overcoming cancer while looking after her baby.

Founder of Debbie Doodah, the Women Who Create Podcast and co-author of My Business My way, Debbie now works with other female entrepreneurs who want to learn how to market their business online. This week, she was crowned Digital Woman of the Year and in 2019, was named as one of the Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs of the Year.

In other words, she knows a thing or to about getting stuff done from the home front.

Debbie’s tips on how to seriously WFH

Make sure you get dressed

Sitting around in pyjamas all day isn’t conducive to getting work done.

Check your to-do list and work out what has to be done today

Plan your day out before you get started, but make sure you create space for taking a break from the computer and eating

If you struggle to stay focused try the Pomodoro technique

Set a timer and work in 25-minute blocks with 5 minutes break in between – it’s amazing what you can achieve in 25 minutes if you’re really focused

Set out your boundaries physically…

Make sure anyone else who might be in your house knows you are working, so they don’t disturb you!

…and digitally

Emails can be a nightmare and it can feel like they need your constant attention, but they don’t! Map out time in you day to check in with your email and for the rest of the time focus on the task at hand.

Time your breaks

If you can’t focus because washing-up or something else mundane needs to be done, set a timer for 10 minutes, get it done and return back to work – also there is a lot of stuff that can just wait!

Find your tribe

If you’re feeling lonely and need to reach out check out Facebook for groups. There are tons out there for people working from home, including the Blue Stockings Society I run for women in business.

Make that tea!

Keep hydrated, take breaks and don’t forget to eat!

Don’t freak yourself out

And stay away from social media and constantly check news update for Covid-19 – it’s amazing how quickly a day can be wasted! If you need to go on social media – set a timer, do what you need to do and then get off it!

Enjoy the break

If you’re well, try to enjoy the freedom of being at home!
