Dog obsessed with carbs looks after her humans by protecting bread and cookies at home

Dogs are known for being caring creatures who defend and protect their humans.

But Jakey, a German Rottweiler from Buffalo, Minnesota, has a strange way of looking after her family – by making sure that no strangers steal the carbs in the house.

Whenever her owner, 30-year-old Katrina Frank, leaves the home, the six-year-old dog will search the property for any bread and cookies, and once found, she will then ‘guard’ the products until Katrina returns.

The mum-of-three, who works as a nurse, decided to share a video of her kooky pup’s peculiar habit on social media, where it has since gone viral, racking up over 2,500 shares and 34,000 likes.

‘She began hiding her bread, when we moved into our farm four years ago,’ Katrina said.

‘I’d come home at night and find her laying by the bread.

‘I’ve never thought much of it and I would just thank her for keeping the bread safe and pick it up and move on.

‘I’m assuming because we use it so often, she believes it is the most important thing in our house.’

When Katrina realised what Jakey was up to, she decided to hide the bread, but the clever pooch would sniff it out.

‘I can put the bread anywhere – counter, breadbox, pantry, fridge-and she will find it and protect it anytime we leave,’ said the nurse.’

While bread seems to be Jakey’s main priority when it comes to safety, she also looks after other carbs, like cookies, having once stolen a container filled with 17 of them.

Katrina said; ‘If we don’t have bread, she moves on to baked goods.

‘I got home from work, found the empty Tupperware, and had a mini meltdown, thinking she had eaten over a dozen cookies.

‘As I panicked, she led me around to all 17 cookies, hidden all over the house.

‘She had not broken a single cookie and she hid them in my bed, closet, the kids rooms, upstairs, and in the living room.

‘She often keeps the bread in the living room or my bedroom, but occasionally has it in other places.

‘She insists on showing me where it is immediately when I arrive home, after I give her her nightly hug, and will not leave it until I pick it up.’

Ever the resourceful dog, Jakey will even grab butter, if that’s the only option left.

And she won’t nibble on any of the goods.

‘She has also protected butter – both stick form and I Cant Believe Its Not Butter, when we are out of bread.

‘Again, we use these items very frequently and I think she sees that and assumes they are valuable.

‘She has a very soft mouth and has never ruined anything, minus a package of English muffins she once shredded.

‘She did not eat any, just tore them to bits – I like to think she decided they were stale imposter bread bits.

‘She has been the best family dog we could have ever asked for and my three kids Brandon,11, Jase 5, and Austin 3 even see her like a mum.

‘Jakey is quirky, loveable, and until her post took off, I just took her bread hiding habits as completely normal!’

And with coronavirus stockpiling in full force, having a carbohydrate guard dog is pretty nifty.
