Coronavirus UK: Are MOT tests cancelled and can you still get one during lockdown?

More measures have been announced to try to stop the spread of coronavirus, which means that you can only leave your house for essential reasons.

If have a car and an MOT coming up, you might be wondering what will happen.

MOTs (in most situations) will still be going ahead as some key workers rely on their vehicles to get to and from work and we need to ensure they are roadworthy.

If you are self-isolating and your MOT expires while you are at home, you will be able to drive your car to and from the garage for a pre-booked test.

Basically, if your MOT expires while you are staying at home, you will need to book an appointment as soon as possible after the lockdown is lifted and will only be able to drive your car to that appointment.

Once your current certificate has expired, you must keep your car off public roads until it is re-tested and taxed.

If you are going to be using you car, you must get a test and it is best to check with your garage if they are still open as some may decide to close.

Karen Rotberg from BookMyGarage, explains: ‘Garages are permitted to stay open and MOTs are still a legal requirement in England, Scotland and Wales.

‘Key workers will need to get to work and many people need to drive to the shops, so cars are still needed on the roads.

‘Most of our garages are staying open, those that are temporarily closing have been put on a four week ‘holiday’ so are still accepting bookings but for after four weeks’ time.’

The exception is for any heavy vehicle MOTs. MOTs for lorries, buses and trailers will be suspended for up to three months.

All HGV and PSV vehicles with a current MOT will be issued with a three-month certificate of temporary exemption (CTE).

Those who need a vehicle approval test because of modifications they have made, will also need to wait three months.

If you are learning to drive, the bad news is that all driving and theory tests are also suspended for three months, unless you are classed as a critical worker.

Those who have had tests cancelled will be given priority when they are back to normal again.
