Company loans NHS workers electronic bikes for free so they can avoid packed tubes

Images of packed tubes are still making the rounds on social media, with key workers including NHS staff frustrated by the lack of social distancing underground.

But there’s an alternative option in sight.

As of today, to ensure that medical professionals can stay safe while travelling into work and looking after the rest of us, NHS workers will be able to access electronic bikes for free, courtesy of Fully Charged, an e-bike retailer.

Each bike, worth £1,999, will be on loan for three months – free of charge.

If you’re travelling a longer journey, you’ll be happy to know that although they are pedal bikes, the electric motor will boost the power as you pedal (meaning you can use less effort, and not arrive exhausted from the ride).

NHS staff who want to take advantaged of the temporary scheme, have to sign up online and then collect the bike from the company’s sites in London Bridge or Silverstone.

If you’ve never used an e-bike before, don’t worry, it will come with instructions.

‘Bicycle stores have been excluded from the Government’s list of mandatory closures amid the COVID-19 crisis,’ said Dan Parsons, director of operations at Fully Charged.

‘This is a reflection of the importance of cycling as a viable alternative to using public transport, as well as the benefits it offers to people’s health and wellbeing, particularly at a time of self-isolation and social distancing.’

Unfortunately however, there are only 20 e-bikes available so far, but the company is adding more to its supply.

‘We hope NHS staff will seize the offer and, moreover, we are calling on the rest of the industry to help provide more support for doctors and nurses in this way,’ Dan added.

If you’re not one of the lucky 20 to get your hands on a fancy e-bike, there’s always London’s Santander cycles, though these are only free if the journey is under 30 minutes.
