With plenty of dogs to choose from, pups have to charm potential adopters as much as they can to stand out.
That’s clearly the idea back labrador Burreaux had in mind with his adorable trick – he smiles at visitors to the shelter he lives in, in the hopes that they’ll take him to a new forever home.
Little Burreaux was brought to the Humane Society shelter in Northwest Louisiana when he was just eight weeks old by shelter director Courtney Wingate.
She spotted Burreaux with two other puppies – called Joe and O, with the three being named after local football team coaches – at an animal control kennel, and decided to step in to help them.
Burreaux was the sickliest of the three, and had to be rushed to an animal hospital for treatment, before making a full recovery.
When he came back, his pal Joe had been adopted, and it appears Burreaux’s desire for a new family had ramped up, as he started smiling intently at those who came to check him out.
Shelter volunteer Sarrah Walton told The Dodo: ‘It’s whenever you’re talking real sweet to him … he gets this smile like he wants something,
‘[It’s] like he’s telling you, “Come pet me, come love me.”‘
The volunteers and staff had previously helped Joe get adopted by sharing a video of him playing fetch, and decided they’d do the same with Burreaux, showcasing just how sweetly he’d smile for a ‘good boy’ and a pat.
‘We were thinking, “Burreaux wants a home so bad that he’s always smiling, trying to cute it up,”‘ Walton said.
‘So we took that video and now it’s going viral.’
They really did go viral, and videos and pictures of him grinning were shared and viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
But most importantly, they got Burreaux a home, and he was adopted this week.
The original video was shared on 22 February, and within seven days the pup had found a fur-ever home with a young local couple.
As it turned out, his cheesy grin didn’t just show the world he was happy – it gave him his happily ever after.
