Tell the truth – you’ve probably wasted so many avocados over the course of your life by popping the uneaten half back in the fridge and completely forgetting about it.

Even if you leave the cut open avocado for a night you’re greeting to a brown mess the following day. It’s not exactly appetising.

Some people use plastic containers or plastic wrap, but often these still aren’t airtight enough (and plastic wrap isn’t great for the environment) to stop the dreaded browning.

Others dribble some lemon juice on the avo, but even then you’re not guaranteed for freshness, as some report this making the flesh somewhat soggy.

To fix these first world problems comes a New Zealand mum, who’s shared a tip to keep avocados fresh using something you probably already have in the fridge.

‘I sort of accidentally discovered that I have been throwing away first-class food wrap,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make for excellent food wrap. They’re designed for that purpose in the first place.’

Recycling… keeping it green.Sort of accidentally I discovered that I have been throwing away 1st class food wrap. …

Sharing a picture of a perfectly green looking avocado that she’d initially cut up and stored a whole week ago, she continued: ‘It was all good for today’s breakfast. Incidentally, lettuce leaves even keep bread buns fresh.’

Over 7,000 people ended up liking post, with many commenting wondering why they hadn’t thought of the tip before.

It does make sense in that – as the original poster said – the outer lettuce leaves (which are slightly hardier) are made to protect the inner leaves by design.

So, why can’t we put them to use on the rest of our food to help keep them moist and fresher for longer?

Not only is cheap, using up the bits of the salad we’d likely chuck in the bin anyway, it’s also way more environmentally friendly than cling-film.
