Traveller bashed online for snoozing on the floor of an airport – but is she really being unreasonable?

The people of the internet really love to judge other people’s actions in public spaces – especially when it comes to the shared hell of travelling.

Recently there was mass debate over who was in the right when a woman reclined her plane seat and the man behind her incessantly punched her chair.

Spoiler: you’re allowed to recline your seat. You’re definitely not allowed to punch things.

The rules of what’s acceptable aren’t always clear and it’s easy to disagree on where actions fall on the acceptability scale. Growing up we’re not provided with easy guidebooks for how to behave in every single situation, but despite knowing this we tend to seethe with rage if we spot someone doing something we deem in poor taste.

In that vein, here’s a question: Is this woman breaking all those unwritten rules by sleeping on the floor of an airport, directly in front of two chairs?

As you’d expect, views are pretty mixed.

The photo was submitted to the travelcreeps Instagram anonymously, along with the caption: ‘Becky, 24 yr old “influencer” takes a moment to reflect and enjoy the stares she’s getting from her followers by selfishly taking up two seats.’

Some people in the comments are strongly against the woman, – we’ll call her Becky for ease, but that likely isn’t her name – arguing that by lying directly in front of the seats she’s preventing anyone from sitting there.

Some people have suggested that lying on the floor could make Becky a tripping hazard.

One anti-Becky wrote in the comments: ‘I call this woman-spreading, they use bags and things to take up as much room as possible.’

We must point out that the woman in question only has one bag and is lying down with it closely nestled next to her shoulder. If she wanted to take up ‘as much room as possible’ she could lie in a starfish pose and spread out the contents of her bag.

Another person called Becky inconsiderate, writing: ‘Very inconsiderate like so many travellers.

‘Shameful. What a piece of garbage. Where was airport security?’

Others note that the photo shows plenty of other available seats, and that if anyone wanted to sit in those two seats specifically they could just give Becky a nudge to move slightly out of the way.

Plus, she’s likely very, very tired and desperate for some rest. Perhaps Becky has been hit by a load of delays and is massively jetlagged.

One person wrote: ‘Leave her alone. Clearly there are many seats available, it’s not a crowded airport and you have no idea how exhausted she was.’

Another said: ‘Many seats are empty in the picture. Sometimes you are so tired that you just want to lie down and sleep.’

‘Damn, she is tired, let her get some rest. There are plenty other seats.’

Haven’t we been there? Can’t we understand the challenges of having a snooze while sitting upright in a chair? Haven’t we all considered just lying down for a nap on the floor, but held off out of fear and shame?

Look, there’s no official answer here. It’s still very much up for debate.

So, what do you think? Is it okay to lie down on the floor of an airport to get some rest? And what other travelling crimes do we need to be aware of?
