Tying the knot in 2020? You might want to read up on Etsy’s predictions for the biggest wedding trends of the year.
You know, just to make sure your big day is as on-point and Instagram-worthy as possible.
While 2019 may have seen the rise of massive wreaths, the colour orange, and birthstone engagement rings, 2020 provides a whole new mix of decor and dress choices brides are leaning towards.
Handily, Etsy has put together their roundup of the trends to expect this year, from having a dog as your best man to rocking a power suit.
This year is all about putting aside tradition and doing things that feel authentic, say Etsy.
Etsy Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson said: ‘2020 is the year of purpose, so it’s all about staying true to your partnership. Couples are casting aside traditions that don’t fit with their vibe, and making their big day a celebration of what’s most important to them, from inclusivity to sustainability.’
Sounds lovely to us. Here are the wedding trends you can expect to spot all over 2020.
Seventies-inspired touches
We’re talking old-school disco for the dancefloor, flowing bohemian dresses, and plenty of florals.
Get someone to wear a paisley bow tie and you’re set.
Non-traditional wedding parties
You’ve already seen a load of these – grandmas as flower girls, cats as ring bearers, groomswomen.
This year will see more couples throwing out the rules around the traditional wedding roles, selecting whoever they want as bridesmaids, best men, ushers, and more.
Getting pets involved wins bonus points, of course.
Matching jackets
Remember when Kimye wore those ‘just married’ leather jackets after making things official?
Yep, that moment is still making waves in the wedding industry.
Customise coordinating jackets to capture your shared style and display your new partnership. Maybe a denim style with stitched on patches is more your style, or perhaps you prefer throwing some paint on some beaten-up leather. Whatever works for you – as long as it’s matching.
Power suits
Don’t want to wear a massive wedding gown with a flouncy skirt? Don’t.
As pressure wanes to go for super traditional wedding attire, more brides are opting for power suits to tie the knot.
Think clean white blazers, caped designs with skinny trousers, and tailored jumpsuits.
You can go for the best of both worlds, if you do have dreams of flowing lace – just stick on a dress for the ceremony then swap to a more dance-friendly suit for the reception.
Vintage rings
We’ve grown tired of the mass-produced designer rings and want something a touch more special.
Throw in our increased concerns around sustainability and it makes sense that vintage rings are set to be a trend in 2020.
Dayna says: ‘When it comes to deeply personal jewelry, there’s something extra-romantic about purposefully choosing a previously-loved piece with its own story to tell. Plus you’re giving new life to something old, which is an easy way to shop sustainably.’
Sustainable styles
That concern with fast fashion and waste continues through to what we’ll be wearing on our wedding days.
Expect vintage styles and upcycled pieces to make more appearances. Dyeing and rewearing your wedding dress should become more of the norm, too.
Wellness favours
No more sugared almonds wrapped in tissue paper – this year party favours for your wedding guests should be wellness-themed.
Think candles, relaxing oils, mini bath bombs. Anything that encourages self-care and relaxation after the hustle of the wedding will be greatly appreciated.
