Dining alone can be daunting in general, let alone on Valentine’s Day – a day specifically designed for couples, at the exclusion of everyone who isn’t in one.
Tastecard is trying to ease the worry for people who want to eat their meal alone this V-Day, and in turn, trying to inspire self-love from the self-partnered.
It’s not quite the standard restaurant format, though, and will see diners eating in front of a mirror that flashes up motivational quotes.
There will also be a big reveal at the end, where you’re introduced to the diner opposite and you can decide whether you want to take advantage of a two for one offer together.
The ‘Two4One’ restaurant, on Great Eastern St, London, has mirrors on each table, with the idea that you’re still having dinner with someone you love – yourself.
According to tastecard, ‘Diners will experience mood-boosting playlists, feel-good soul food from Absurd Bird and mirrors reflecting motivational quotes, putting guests in the mood to have the best solo time.’
Once it gets to the last course, the mirrors will be lifted and you can see who you’ve actually been dining opposite (although, thankfully, they won’t have been able to see you dropping burger all down yourself).
You’ll then be given an option to split the bill and claim their two for one experience.
On the menu from Absurd Bird is chicken and vegan tenders, buffalo wings, crispy fried chicken and vegan burgers along with peanut butter cheesecake with toffee sauce.
To many single people, this is a huge nightmare, but for those of you who want to have a new experience, it could be a nice option and a good way to avoid staying in and feeling the FOMO.
The events will be held on 13 and 14 February from 7pm to 9 pm, and tickets are available through Eventbrite for £20 per ticket.
All money raised will be going to tastecard’s charity, Mary’s Meal (who provide school meals to children who may not otherwise get them across the world) so even if you feel a bit silly throughout the whole thing, at least you know it’s all for a good cause.
Matt Turner, founder of tastecard, said: ‘This is a really fun, exciting pop-up that carries a significant message. People need to remember the importance of loving yourself and despite numerous restaurants that are great for solo dining, no restaurant experience has been designed with a function that offers the two of you, for the price of one.’
