Thinking of proposing to your lover but scared what society might think? Been waiting for your boyfriend to pop the question for years but still no ring?
Well, now’s your chance to throw a spanner in the works and do the proposing yourself. Leap Day’s coming up – the one day that comes round every four years that society deigns women to take their romantic future into their own hands.
And to celebrate this rare reprieve, a hotel in Iceland is offering women a free one-night stay in they propose to their partners on the big day (February 29).
Hotel Rangá is a Northern Lights luxury resort situated around an hour’s drive from Reykjavik – far from the madding crowd.
It’s offering its in-house services to help women ‘take the leap’ by providing a complimentary breakfast, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a bottle of fizz, as well as the change to sit in a star-gazing observatory to hear love stories from Greek mythology.
And after that, the floor is yours.
Once your beloved has said ‘yes’, you can then kick back in one of the hotel’s three heated hot tubs and look out for the spectacular northern lights.
The next day, kickstart your engagement by taking your new fiance out for a day of snowmobiling, glacier walking and horse riding across South Iceland.
Eyrún AnÃta Gylfadóttir, the hotel’s marketing manager, told Travel + Leisure that they wanted to ’empower women to have the courage to take the lead not only on Leap Day, but every day, and celebrate them for it!’
If that sounds like marketing guff to you, it is worth saying that Iceland does rank first for gender equality.
The country has topped the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index for a decade. Women currently hold 44% of posts on company boards, make up 66% of university graduates and hold 30 of the country’s 62 parliamentary seats. Oh, and 80% of women are in the Icelandic workforce (compared to 72% of women in the UK).
Anyway, if you fancy popping the question – which you could do any day, any time – then you may as well get a free trip out of it. And you could always retract your offer once you’ve returned…
