As coronavirus is declared a global emergency, 213 people have died, and discrimination against Asian people is on the rise, PETA has seen an opportunity to encourage people to go vegan.

The animal welfare organisation has released face masks holding the message: ‘meat markets breed killer diseases. Go vegan.’

Yes, even though we still don’t know what’s causing the spread of coronavirus.

Yes, even though it’s been shown that face masks don’t really work to protect you from the illness.

In a press release announcing the masks, PETA wrote: ‘Following the announcement by the Department of Health and Social Care that it’s conducted 73 tests for suspected cases of coronavirus in the UK, PETA US is offering new face masks that spread a lifesaving message: Go vegan.

‘The SARS-like virus is believed to have originated in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China – a “wet market” where live and dead animals are sold for human consumption.

‘Coronavirus has already infected thousands and killed at least 81 humans in China. The first cases have recently been confirmed in Australia, Mexico, and the US.

‘PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that, in addition to carrying a high risk of contamination from pathogens, including E coli, campylobacter, and salmonella, meat contains no fibre and is packed with artery-clogging saturated fat and cholesterol.’

The founder of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, said: ‘Filthy factory farms, abattoirs, and meat markets threaten the health of every human being on the planet by providing a breeding ground for deadly diseases like coronavirus, SARS, bird flu, and more.

‘The masks urge everyone to protect themselves by avoiding meat like the plague.’

As a head’s up, while there are suspicions that coronavirus has spread to humans as a result of meat products, we still don’t fully understand how coronavirus happened.

If you’ve already been exposed to coronavirus, however, going vegan won’t magically save you.

As we mentioned, masks aren’t even a guarantee of protection.

And as people panic and mourn loved ones, now might not be the best time to imply that victims of the virus could have avoided illness by just going vegan.

Regardless, if you are keen on getting a custom PETA face mask, you can preorder your own now.
