Want to get your pet in on the action this Pancake Day? This recipe is completely safe for dogs.
It’s usually fine for dogs to eat some plain crepes or pancakes, as long as you avoid things like chocolate and some dairy products or too much sugar.
Created by Sean McCormack, Head Vet at tails.com, the recipe is featured in The Happy Dog Cookbook, a collection of recipes avoiding anything harmful for dogs, instead using ingredients that help keep them healthy.
All profits from the book are donated to StreetVet, a charity helping the pets of the homeless
Sean uses carrot and chickpeas for the pancakes, which are good for your doggos and you can even have some too.
Sean explains: ‘Carrots are packed with vitamin A, which helps support doggie immune systems, as well as promote healthy skin and coat and good eyesight.
‘I’ve also included chickpeas, which are power packed with vitamins, protein, fibre, iron, and more. ‘
Carrot and Chickpea Pup Pancakes from The Happy Dog Cookbook
Ingredients
100g cooked chickpeas (drained, tinned chickpeas are fine)
1⁄2 small carrot (about 50g), grated
2 eggs
100g self-raising flour
150ml oat milk
2 tbsp sunflower oil
Method
Makes 16 pancakes
Put the chickpeas in a food processor and whiz for a few seconds. Add all the remaining ingredients except the oil, and whiz again until blended.
Heat a little of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan.
Spoon a heaped tablespoon of batter per pancake into the pan, leaving a little space in between.
Fry the pancakes for 2–3 minutes on each side until lightly golden.
Plate up and allow to cool a little, and you’ll have your dog barking for brekkie.
Store the pancakes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days, or freeze, separated by sheets of greaseproof paper, for up to 3 months.
