A mum-of-three has transformed the carpet on her stairs using a £5 dye.
Bridie Hodgson said that the carpet was ‘truly ruined’ so she and her husband decided to try it as a last resort before they replaced it.
She bought a bottle of smoke grey colour fabric dye on eBay and added four tablespoons to 700ml of warm water in an old spray bottle.
She then sprayed the dye over her carpet, with the help of her husband.
They rubbed it into the carpet, wearing gloves to protect their hands, and then left it to dry overnight.
Posting on the DIY On A Budget Official page, Bridie said: ‘I’ve been meaning to do this for ages like a year or so. And the time has come.
‘I’m aware of the risks and as the carpet is truly ruined this is a last resort for us.
‘I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s cool! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.’
Bridie said it took four tubs of the dye to do 30 steps and two landings, costing a total of £20.
She’s really happy with the finished result and said it has even passed the ‘white sock test’, meaning there’s no transfer when they walk on it.
Other people said they hadn’t had the same success when they tried it but Bridie recommended giving it a go.
Posting an update on the Facebook group, Bridie added: ‘It’s been a week and it’s worked.
‘It’s had plenty of time to dry and we also do the white sock challenge. We were going to use our carpet cleaner but found we haven’t need to.’
People were really impressed with the transformation and said they were going to try something similar to update old carpets on a budget.
