Instagram might have convinced you that the only way to decorate your home is with grey, white and neutral tones – but one woman has brought a touch of childhood magic to her decor.

Ditsy Murdock transformed her kitchen into a fantastical scene straight out of Alice and Wonderland – and the whole thing only cost her £60.

The DIY-savvy 40-year-old, from Northern Ireland, has always adored fairy tales and wanted to be reminded of her favourite childhood story every time she walked into her kitchen.

And, as a mum of five aged between one and 23, Ditsy wanted her home to be full of life and fun.

‘As a little girl, I always loved fairy tales and having four girls of my own, I hated my bland kitchen so much,’ Ditsy told LatestDeals.co.uk.

‘Growing up, I always believed the kitchen is the heart of the home and my kitchen felt nothing like that. I love colour and I’m not a grey type of girl.’

To transform her kitchen, Ditsy bought some simple paint testers for £2 a tub from B&Q. She also spent £40 on vinyl for the worktops and door and drawer handles.

‘I also got a big tub of dark wax as I love aged-looking things,’ Ditsy explains.

‘I got 10 different colours at £2 a tub which was loads and cost just £20. I put an undercoat of white primer on before but did no prepping really, and while the kids slept, I got to work.

‘It took around four days to complete as I have four teenagers and a baby to deal with also.’

When the paint was dry, Ditsy sealed it with a varnish and her Alice in Wonderland-inspired kitchen was complete.

The whole project took around four days, and Ditsy is over the moon with how her idea turned out.

‘I do love it and it’s definitely a talking point with visitors,’ she adds.  ‘I loved seeing the changes so much and the room seemed like it was giving me a huge hug. I’m working on the lounge now.

‘It was so easy and straightforward to do. My biggest challenge was keeping the kids out of the cupboards until they had dried.

‘I will admit I’m sure it’s not to everyone’s taste but the feedback I have got has been lovely.’

Ditsy’s key advice for anyone wanting to try the same thing is to remember to seal with a matte varnish afterwards, and to take your time.

‘If you make a mistake, just start again,’ she says.

‘I’m a big Disney fan, so who knows, maybe Mary Poppins next. I had to give up work to look after my mum and my paintbrush is my escape.’
